Canada-Germany Energy Partnership

The Canada-Germany Energy Partnership was established by Natural Resources Canada (NRCan) and the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Action (BMWK) in March 2021. The Steering Group, which is co-chaired by Interim Deputy Minister Mollie Johnson (NRCan) and State Secretary Udo Philipp (BMWK), sets the strategic direction of the Energy Partnership and establishes its thematic working groups. It met for the third time in June 2023 and endorsed an Action Plan focusing on bilateral cooperation on hydrogen, mineral security for energy transition and climate, energy security, and clean energy technology.

Within the Energy Partnership, the hydrogen cooperation activities aim to support the implementation of the Canada-Germany Hydrogen Alliance, with the goal of establishing a supply chain for renewable hydrogen derivatives from Canada to Germany. Within the topic of minerals security, the focus is on advancing bilateral trade and investment partnerships, collaborating on R&D and advancing ESG standards in supply chains. Topics of cooperation for energy security include renewable energy (including offshore wind) as well as the evaluation of short-term cooperation opportunities on LNG. On clean energy technology, a series of bilateral activities focusing on cleantech deployment in various sectors (industry, transport, energy) is planned.
